Homemade explosives seized in Geelong

Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged two men – aged 53 and 29 – following the execution of a search warrant in Corio yesterday in which homemade explosives were seized by police.

A 53-year-old Corio man has been charged with possess firearm, possess cartridge ammunition, possess explosive substance, manufacture explosive substance, cultivate narcotic plant, and possess cannabis.

A 29-year-old Corio man has been charged with prohibited person possess firearm, prohibited person possess silencer, possess firearm in contravention of a firearm prohibition order, possess cartridge ammunition, possess explosive substance, manufacture explosive substance, cultivate narcotic plant, possess cannabis, and fail to comply with direction to assist.

Victoria Police said the charges followed an operation into firearm prohibition order compliance and the execution of a warrant at a Remington Street address at about 11am on Monday.

“Detectives located and seized one firearm and homemade explosive materials during their search,” Victoria Police said.

“Officers from the Bomb Response Unit attended the scene to assist and the area has since been deemed safe.”

The pair will appear before Geelong Magistrates’ Court today.
