Golf events to tee off regional recovery

Regional NSW is set to receive a tourism boost with the NSW Open men’s golf series to tee off on courses across the State later this year.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro and Member for the Dubbo electorate, Dugald Saunders today announced $700,000 to assist Golf NSW to stage qualifiers for the annual tournament in regional NSW.

“Golfers love nothing more than a weekend away and a new course to play, so I’m sure fans will jump at the chance to plan a regional road trip to watch the pros and also get in a few rounds themselves,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The Department of Regional NSW will work with Golf NSW to deliver an event that is both COVIDSafe and provides economic benefits through increased tourism.”

Mr Barilaro said prequalification rounds were likely to be held in Dubbo, Albury, Bega, Coffs Harbour, Queanbeyan and Tweed, with dates to be finalised soon.

Mr Saunders said the 2020 Women’s NSW Open, played in Dubbo in February, had delivered economic and social benefits with fans travelling to the region to see some of the world’s best professional and amateur players.

“The Women’s Open was the first major tournament to be held in the region and it’s fantastic news that another sporting event of that calibre will be played right here in Dubbo,” he said.

“Events like these bring new fans to the sport, encourage locals to visit and use the clubhouse, and attract visitors to see the regions and enjoy the services and hospitality of local businesses.

“The NSW Government’s funding of $1.3 million to Dubbo Golf Course delivered the improvements needed to host that world class event and improve access to the club facilities that I’m proud are continuing to provide benefits for our community,” said Mr Saunders.
