Giant kite festival ready to fly

The skies above Yacht Club Beach at Southend will come alive with colour and whimsy on January 24th, as the Adelaide Kite Flyers Association (AKFA) present a spectacular kite flying display at the Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival.

Hosted by the Wattle Range Council, the event is free to attend and open to kite flyers of all ages and experience levels.

Sea themed kites of all shapes, sizes and designs will dot the horizon for a visual spectacle like no other. The AKFA will showcase the sea kite designs, many standing over 30 feet high.

Expect to see everything from whimsical sea creatures paying homage to dreams of flight.

“Kite flying is a fun activity for all ages and a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the simple pleasures in life,” said Caroline Hill, Manager Community Development, Wattle Range Council.

“We’re thrilled to partner with AKFA to bring this event to our community and highlight the natural beauty of Southend Beach as the perfect backdrop for such an uplifting display.”

In addition to AKFA’s curated kite show, attendees are invited to bring their own kites to fly or build and decorate kites on-site at one of the festival’s craft activities. Kite flying lessons and demonstrations will also be offered to help first-timers discover the joy of kite flying.

“The Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival is shaping up to be an unforgettable event and our ground display will have cars that people can stand in for photos” said Justine, AKFA Secretary.

“We can’t wait to fill the skies with colour and see the smiles on people’s faces as they stop to look up in wonder.”

The Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival will take place at Yacht Club Beach, Leake Street Beach Access, Southend on Wednesday, 24 January 2024 from 10am to 2pm.  Entry to the festival is free.
