Brisbane council approves homes plan for growth suburbs

A plan to support more housing, new jobs and improve the look and feel of the growing suburbs of Nathan, Salisbury and Moorooka has been given the green light by Brisbane City Council.

The Nathan, Salisbury, Moorooka Neighbourhood Plan was adopted by Council today following community consultation and support from the Queensland Government.

The Council says the new neighbourhood plan will guide the delivery of modernised streetscapes, new business precincts, residential precincts, and better connectivity to transport to support this growing precinct now and into the future.

The neighbourhood plan allows for the creation of around 2,500 new homes and around 12,500 additional jobs.

“Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest growing capital cities and we’re doing what we can to deliver new homes while protecting our incredible lifestyle,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“This new neighbourhood plan will ensure our suburbs can continue to cater for our growing population, while delivering better amenities and more to see and do.

“A key part of this plan is to unlock more housing within walking distance to key infrastructure, such as transport, shops and businesses to ensure our suburbs remain the best place to live, work and relax.

“We’re excited to see this neighbourhood plan come to life and deliver one of the most significant improvements to these suburbs in years, transforming them into vibrant lifestyle precincts.”

Council updated the plan last year based on feedback from 174 residents who made submissions during community consultation.

A key focus of the plan is to improve walkability and transport connections between major employment and residential areas.

The Moorooka Magic Mile precinct has been earmarked as a major employment and lifestyle precinct, with plans to reinvigorate the area to encourage businesses and improve liveability.

The neighbourhood plan also accommodates a future upgrade of Ipswich Road from four to six lanes to improve traffic flow and a shady subtropical boulevard through Moorooka.

A new bikeway on the western side of Ipswich Road is also supported as part of future Council upgrades.

The plan will also protect the local natural environment, including Toohey Forest Park, Rocky Water Holes Creek and Moolabin Creek.

The Nathan, Salisbury and Moorooka Neighbourhood Plan will come into effect on 27 June.
