Alleged bushfire arsonist faces court

A Richmond man faced court today over his alleged role in five deliberately lit bushfires in Sydney’s west last year.

Strike Force Myler was established to investigate a number of suspicious bushfires within the Nepean/Hawkesbury area from December 2019.

Police say that at around 2.35pm on December 3, emergency services were called to Firetrail and Smeeton Roads in Castlereagh following reports of two separate bushfires.

NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded and began to extinguish the blaze when a third fire was reported on Wilshire Road, Londonderry.

Police allege the man lit a further two fires at Clarendon and Richmond the same night.

All fires were extinguished after several hours but not before an estimated 40 hectares of bushland was burnt.

Nepean Police detectives attended a home in Richmond just after 9am this morning and arrested a 39-year-old man. He was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court today.
