Staying socially connected as we age is not just good for our general health and wellbeing – it’s essential.
Research has shown that maintaining strong social connections as we get older can lead to a happier, healthier, and longer life. People who stay connected through volunteering, joining community groups, or simply staying in touch with family and friends experience a host of positive benefits.
From reducing the risk of depression to boosting cognitive function, social connections play a crucial role in maintaining our physical and mental health as we age.
Recognising the importance of social connection for older Australians, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has funded LiveUp, a free healthy ageing guide designed to help older people maintain their independence and social connection.
LiveUp features a comprehensive list of more than 3,500 activities and groups across Australia focused on keeping older people physically active and socially connected.
By entering their postcode at the end of a simple quiz featured on the LiveUp website, older people can find locally relevant activities and networks based in their local government area.
LiveUp has also created ConnectUp, a closed Facebook group designed to bring together older Australians from across Australia. On ConnectUp older people can form new friendships, ask questions, and learn healthy ageing tips and tricks.
If you’re looking to expand your social circle, try something new, or simply stay connected with your community, LiveUp is an excellent resource. It’s easy to use, and it’s free! Visit liveup.org.au today to explore the many activities and groups available.
If you prefer to speak to someone over the phone, LiveUp’s friendly Navigation team is ready to help you find activities near you for free. Give them a call at 1800 951 971.
Staying connected as we age is vital for our health and wellbeing. LiveUp is here to help you do just that!
