Health chief appeals for elderly to get vaccinated as COVID death toll rises

As NSW records 233 new COVID-19 cases today, the state’s chief health officer has appealed to elderly residents to get vaccinated as two new deaths are also confirmed.

Dr Kerry Chant said a woman in her 80’s had died at Camperdown’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, after testing positive to COVID-19 on July 27.

The second death was, shockingly, a man aged in his 20’s who had tested positive and was isolating at home at the time of his death. His condition reportedly worsened dramatically last night, before he passed away.

“We are very concerned about number of older people still not vaccinated,” Dr Chant said at this morning’s media conference.

“It’s just really tragic when I see people in their 70s, 80s, and 90s that are still not vaccinated.

“We know vaccines work. Vaccinations protect you – even one dose. I urge people to come forward for their second dose and not delay.”

Meanwhile, NSW Health has been notified of a number of new transport routes of concern associated with confirmed cases of COVID‑19.

Anyone who travelled on the following bus routes at the listed times is a close contact and must get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result, and call 1800 943 553 unless they have already been contacted by NSW Health. Please get tested even if you have had a test in recent days:
