Couple charged over COVID check-in refusal

A 55-year-old man and 63-year-old woman have been charged after allegedly breaching COVID health orders, intimidation, assault and resisting arrest in Sydney’s inner west.

Police say that at around 3.30pm yesterday, officers attended a bank inside a shopping mall at Ashfield following reports that bank staff were being abused by a customer.

“Officers from Burwood Police Area Command attended and were informed by staff that the man entered the bank without scanning the QR code. When a staff member asked the man to scan the QR code he allegedly became abusive. A male security officer intervened where he was allegedly pushed by the man and threatened,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The 55-year-old man was still at the scene when officers arrived. As police approached the man it will be alleged, he became abusive and upon being arrested he attempted to resist officers.

“While police were attempting to affect the arrest of the man, a 63-year-old woman was arrested by officers for allegedly hindering the arrest of the man.”

Both were taken to Burwood Police Station. Inquiries established that the man and woman were an Eagle Vale husband and wife.

They have been granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on October 5.
