18 Sydney aged care home residents admitted to hospital

Eighteen residents of an aged care home in Sydney’s inner-west have been admitted to hospital after testing positive to the COVID-19 virus.

A female staff member at the Wyoming Nursing Home in Summer Hill – who had received one vaccination dose – tested positive to the potentially deadly virus on 27 July.

Twenty COVID-19 cases have so far been connected to the aged care facility – 18 residents and two staff members.

NSW Chief health officer, Kerry Chant said the remainder of residents on the top floor of the facility had been sent to hospital as a precaution.

Management of the nursing home say all close and casual contacts of the nurse have been identified.

“All staff who are close or casual contacts have been tested and have been instructed to isolate. Residents have been tested daily,” the Wyoming Nursing Home statement said.

“Twelve residents have been identified as positive for COVID-19. They have been transferred to hospital as a precaution and the staff member, as well as her close contacts, are now in isolation.”

The statement said 80% of the nursing home’s 65 residents were fully vaccinated.

“More than 75% of the 60 staff are fully vaccinated with 80% having received at least their first dose,” it said.

“Testing of residents and staff will continue daily and the facility has undergone deep cleaning while being in full lockdown with all residents in isolation.

“Expert infection prevention and control staff, infectious diseases staff as well as clinical staff are on site to ensure adherence to strict infection control processes including correct personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of residents and staff.

“The statement said the facility was in regular communication with “residents and their families, assuring them that everything is being done to ensure their safety and well being”.
