Work begins on Perth’s newest beach

Works have begun on Perth’s newest family-friendly beach, marking an important step in the delivery of a world-class recreation and lifestyle precinct at Ocean Reef.

The WA Government’s $272.3 million transformation of the new Ocean Reef Marina continues, with the new Ocean Reef family beach and 50-metre coastal pool on track to open to the public in 2026.

“The Ocean Reef Marina, once completed, will become one of Western Australia’s premier waterfront precincts, a key tourism destination for our State and critically will bolster the long-term housing supply and housing diversity in our northern suburbs,” said WA Lands Minister, John Carey.

“With construction commencing on the new family-friendly beach, which will be home to WA’s first 50-metre coastal pool, this significant development continues to take shape to make Western Australia more liveable and attractive.

“Across the development more than 1,000 residential dwellings are planned for the marina precinct across a range of diverse housing types, including homesites, apartments and mixed-use developments.

“It’s brilliant to see the construction progress of the new headquarters for the Marine Rescue Whitfords and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club is continuing, with this transformative project to boost WA’s economic growth.”

The major redevelopment is one of the most significant projects underway in Western Australia. As well as recreational facilities and community spaces, Ocean Reef Marina is set to deliver more than 1,000 new residential dwellings, offering a range of housing options including single residential homes and apartments.

It will also offer an array of shopping, dining and entertainment options to residents, visitors and tourists, with up to 12,000 square metres of retail and commercial floor space, and more than five hectares of community space.

With more than 7,500 tonnes of sand to be put into place, the new beach and pool will transform the area into a vibrant central recreation hub for water-based activities. Both the 150-metre family-friendly beach and coastal pool will be built with shark net protection.

In addition, five hectares of community-accessible open space and recreation reserves will include landscaped parklands, a waterfront promenade and coastal shared path for walking and cycling, and purpose-built recreational areas enhanced with native plants.

A vibrant ocean-themed Beach Playground, inspired by the area’s maritime heritage, will also be constructed, including a giant lobster, boats, waves, shaded seating, changerooms, and inclusive features for children of all abilities. A nearby bike pump track and expansive central parklands are also underway, forming part of the Stage 1 works led by Georgiou Group.

“A marina at Ocean Reef has been talked about for decades, and it’s so exciting to see this world-class waterfront precinct becoming a reality as we promised,” said WA Premier, Roger Cook.

“Western Australians can look forward to taking a dip in Perth’s first coastal pool in 2026, with works now underway on the new Ocean Reef family beach.

“With its recreational amenities and community spaces taking shape, Ocean Reef Marina will be an iconic new destination for Perth’s northern suburbs, offering incredible opportunities to enjoy our city’s quintessential coastal lifestyle, boosting the local economy and creating a range of housing and jobs for Western Australians.”

Construction of the new headquarters for Marine Rescue Whitfords and new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club facilities, which are being delivered by Byte Construct, are also on track for delivery in 2025.

The marine rescue facility, a purpose-built two-storey building, will integrate training, administration and equipment spaces, along with state-of-the-art communication systems. For the first time, three rescue vessels will be permanently moored at the marina, ensuring rapid response capabilities and bolstering safety for northern metro water users.

“The Ocean Reef Marina development is one of Western Australians most important transformational projects, creating new local jobs, and showcasing our world-class northern coastline,” said Joondalup MLA, Emily Hamilton.

“It’s great to see works beginning on the new family-friendly beach at Ocean Reef Marina, while construction of the new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and headquarters of the Marine Rescue Whitfords continues to shape this generational development.”
