Sorry officer, my bird ate my licence

A 43-year-old unlicensed driver who told police a bird had eaten his driver’s licence was found to have amassed more than 500 demerit points against his shocking driving record.

Police say when the Fairy Meadow man was stopped by Wollongong Highway Patrol he produced an altered Proof of Age card to Police as his driver licence.

“When asked to produce his licence, he handed over his Queensland Proof of Age card which had the top ‘Proof of Age Card’ words deliberately cut off,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“This card displayed an expiry date of 2023. When questioned about the card, he said it was his licence, and that his bird had eaten the top of it.”

Doubtful about the card produced, further police inquiries established the card produced was a Queensland Proof of Age card.

“A licence inquiry revealed he had held a NSW Learner licence which expired in 2005, with a lengthy traffic record, so long that the full report of his traffic record had to be requested from RMS.”

When the report was received, Police established that the driver had amassed a staggering 562 demerit points in an 11 year period.

He will appear at Court later in the year charged with unlicensed driving, and producing a card calculated to deceive.
