Shane Warne’s parents “in shock” at son’s death at 52

The parents of Shane Warne have been offered a state funeral as they come to terms with news of the sudden death of their cricketing legend son at the age of 52.

Keith and Brigitte Warne spoke briefly with reporters outside their Melbourne home today, with Shane’s mother telling a Herald Sun journalist, “We’re just in shock…we’re ok”.

Australia’s greatest ever leg spinner was found unconscious in his room at the luxury Samujana Villas resort on the island of Koh Samui around 5pm (9pm local time) on Friday.

He had been staying on the island with four friends, who reportedly tried in vain to resuscitate the father of three.

Prime Minister, Scott Morrison said today the nation was “in shock” at news of Shane’s death from a suspected heart attack.

“It’s just numbingly shocking to hear about Shane’s passing today,” the Prime Minister told 3AW.

“The whole country would have woken up in shock today, it’s just terrible.

“He was one of those cricketers who changed the game globally, not just here in Australia.

“And at such a young age, younger than me. That is a terrible shock to all those who knew and loved him.”

The state funeral is set to be held in Melbourne, with the date to be confirmed.

“We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Shane Warne. A true cricketing genius,” Cricket Australia said in a statement today.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans all across the world.”
