Retired Tasmanian sewing teacher wins citizen honour

Tasmania’s Lynette Grey has been named Waratah-Wynyard Council’s Citizen of the Year for her outstanding voluntary contributions to the Waratah-Wynyard community.

A retired sewing teacher, Lyn dedicates her time to teaching basic sewing and machine skills at weekly workshops with Farm It Forward Tasmania. Her classes provide participants with valuable skills, foster confidence, improve mental health, and create a supportive, welcoming environment.

Beyond teaching, Lyn makes items for charities like Laylah’s Gifts and international causes. On a visit to Africa, she taught women in a small village to sew tote bags, helping them generate income for their community. She also leads the ‘Just Girls’ program at Wynyard Baptist Church, inspiring young women through activities and guest speakers.

“Lyn’s dedication, compassion, and leadership make her a role model and a driving force for positive change in the community,” the Council said in a statement.

The Wynyard Christmas Parade, organised annually by the Wynyard Lions Club, has been named the Community Event of the Year for its vibrant celebration of the festive season. Held in Wynyard’s main streets, this beloved event brings the community together with creative floats, live entertainment, and a joyful atmosphere that captures the spirit and creativity of the Waratah-Wynyard community.

Mayor Mary Duniam praised the award recipients, saying: “Waratah-Wynyard Council is immensely proud of the 2025 Australia Day Award recipients. Their selfless actions, unwavering commitment to the community, and dedication to making a positive difference embody the true spirit of Australia Day.”

“On behalf of Council and residents, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for the remarkable ways you have enriched our community.”
