Quarantine runners arrested in WA

WA Police have arrested two South Australian women overnight after they allegedly escaped hotel quarantine in Perth.

WA Police Acting Commissioner Gary Dreibergs said the woman, aged 19 and 22, were arrested and charged after escaping from the quarantine hotel and catching a taxi to an apartment building in the city.

He said the women did not have permission to be in WA in the first place.

The Acting Commissioner described the incident as “a very serious matter”.

He said the women were not tested for COVID-19 upon arrival in Perth.

Police will now be present when WA conducts a risk assessment of people entering the state, and that risk assessment will be more thorough, he said.

Police officers will also be placed at hotels where necessary, following the overnight quarantine breach.

The women will face Perth Magistrates court this afternoon.
