A man wanted by South Australian Police for fraud and deception offences around Australia has been arrested in Victoria, with investigators looking to speak to residents who may have been a victim of the man’s alleged offending.
Police say the 56-year-old Victorian man allegedly made false documents and defrauded victims out of tens of thousands of dollars after they responded to fraudulent online advertisements for vintage and collectable motor vehicles, including Holden Monaros and Toranas.
The offending is believed to have started around 2019 to 2020.
“The suspect lured prospective buyers into paying deposits for classic vehicles advertised online, predominantly via Gumtree, but ceased communication with the buyer after the money was transferred into a bank account nominated by the suspect,” SA Police said in a statement.
“It is believed there are dozens of victims across Australia, with at least four people in South Australia falling victim to the scam in 2025.”
The man has been charged with numerous fraud offences and remanded in custody to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 10 February.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this particular scam and has not yet reported it is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
