On this day in history… from a true grit showdown to a failed terror attack

On this day in 1865, in the market square of Springfield, Missouri, Wild Bill Hickok shot dead Davis Tutt in what is widely regarded as the first Western showdown in American history.

Also in America, on this day in 1942, actress Mae West, then 48, divorced vaudeville performer, Frank Wallace after 31 years of marriage.

And on this day in 2005, terrorists attempted to attack the London transit system by planting bombs on three subways and on one bus, however the devices failed to detonate. The attempted attack came precisely two weeks after terrorists killed 56 people and wounded 700 others in a similar style of attack on the London transport system.

One of the world’s funniest and most-loved actors would have turned 69 today. The world lost a true comedic giant when Robin Williams took his own life in August 2014.

Also celebrating birthdays today are former NSW Premier, Morris Iemma who turns 59 today; Jeff Fatt of the Wiggles, who will be blowing out 66 candles; and legendary crooner, Cat Stevens who will celebrate his 71st birthday today.
