Four Victorians fined over Darwin arrival

Northern Territory Police have fined four men – aged between 27 and 62 – who entered the Territory today from a declared Victorian COVID-19 hotspot.

Police say the men arrived in the Territory with the intention to quarantine at Howard Springs before continuing interstate for work.

“The four men arrived in Darwin on a commercial flight from Victoria today. Each declared their destinations were mines in Western Australia. None had been granted an exemption to enter the NT,” NT Police said in a statement.

The men were intercepted at the airport and have been transferred to Howard Springs for the night before they return to Victoria tomorrow.

“Again, we have people who are either ignorant of or disregarding the Chief Health Officer Directions. Howard Springs is not a transit centre and we will continue to return people who try to enter the Territory without an exemption for the purposes of then continuing to travel interstate,” Incident Controller, Sachin Sharma said.

The penalty for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Directions is $5024 for an individual and $25,120 for a business.

Anyone intending to travel to the Northern Territory must ensure they comply with the rules outlined on www.coronavirus.nt.gov.au.
