Driver, 83, crashes into coffee shop

Police are investigating after a car driven by an 83-year-old man ploughed into a Starbucks coffee shop at Broadbeach this afternoon, injuring seven people. 

“Around 1.44pm, police were notified that a purple 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback had crashed into the café, located on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Surf Parade,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

Five people were transported to Robina and Gold Coast University Hospitals suffering minor injuries, while two others were treated at the scene for superficial injuries.

Police say the coffee shop was extensively damaged. The 83-year-old driver from Mermaid Waters, who Police say was uninjured in the crash, is assisting officers with their enquiries.
