Designs revealed for new $69.7m aged care facility

The Victorian Government has today revealed designs for a new $69.7 million public aged care facility in Maffra.

Minister for Ageing, Ingrid Stitt, released the first look at designs for the new state-of-the-art public sector residential aged care service – which will be operated by Central Gippsland Health.

Replacing the existing JHF McDonald Wing and Residential Aged Care Wing at Maffra District Hospital, the new 30-bed facility has been designed to provide a modern, safe and comfortable environment for both residents and staff.

“Victorians deserve to age with dignity and respect – and the designs of this modern facility in Maffra are an important milestone for the project providing locals with the chance to age close to home and their loved ones,” said Minister Stitt.

Designed with the dignity, independence and wellbeing of residents in mind, it will feature private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, smaller household-style living areas and shared spaces including a community room, reflection room and landscaped gardens.

The new designs also show that the service will provide a dementia friendly environment that is better suited to supporting the mental health and complex care needs of older Victorians, the Minister said.

The design focus means residents can ‘age in place’ – which is important in regional areas like Maffra – meaning they remain close to networks and maintain family and community connections as their care needs increase, she said.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Central Gippsland Health, the process to appoint a builder to construct the Maffra aged care facility is underway.

“We’re upgrading and building public aged care right across the state because older Victorians and the people caring for them deserve safe, comfortable and state-of-the-art facilities no matter where they live,” said Minister for Health Infrastructure, Melissa Horne.

“This is a massive investment in Maffra and surrounding communities – this new facility will help locals stay close to family and community while receiving the high-quality care they deserve,” said Member for Eastern Victoria, Tom McIntosh.
