Bodies found in submerged car

The bodies of two men in their 50s have been discovered inside a submerged vehicle in a canal near Griffith in the state’s Riverina region.

Police from Murrumbidgee Police District received a report yesterday of two men missing from the Griffith area since Saturday.

As inquiries commenced, police were alerted to a vehicle that had been found on its roof submerged in water in a canal on Mansell Road, Hanwood, about 5.30pm last night.

A closer inspection of the vehicle revealed the bodies of two men trapped inside.

Police say early investigations suggest the vehicle has run off the road and crashed into the canal, tragically killing the driver and his passenger.

Due to the difficult terrain, the extraction of the vehicle will commence this morning, with the assistance of the Volunteer Rescue Association.

Inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.
