Author calls for ‘kindness revolution’

Best-selling author and psychologist, Hugh Mackay, is calling on Australians to consider how we can restore hope and inspire optimism in a bid to spark a ‘kindness revolution’ across our nation.

Mr Mackay will launch his latest book – The Kindness Revolution – at Mount Gambier Library on Wednesday, May 19.

Often described as “the man who explains us to ourselves”, Mr Mackay is one of Australia’s most respected social psychologists, and has had a 60-year career studying and interpreting Australian social trends.

The Kindness Revolution captures the essence of Hugh’s life work and is written for current times, appealing across generations. In the book, Hugh explains how crises and catastrophes can often turn out to be the making of us and why radical kindness is the key to healing.

“The Kindness Revolution reflects on the challenges we faced during 2020, a year ravaged by bushfires and a worldwide pandemic, taking a toll on both our mental and emotional health and the economy, resulting in upheaval and many lessons learned,” Mr Mackay said.

“Is it too much to hope that the lessons learned under the pressure of restrictions might be applied more generically? Might we finally stamp out racism, sexism and ageism?”

He claims our experiences provide guidance about how to develop our resilience, how to become better listeners, and how to rebuild trust – in our institution and in each other.

The author event is free with bookings required due to limited spaces. Contact Mount Gambier Library on 8721 2540 or book online www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library under ‘Programs and Events’.
