Dark day for Gold Coast first responders

Drivers are being urged to take care on the roads as the summer holiday season approaches after four people died in three crashes on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said it had been a dark day for families and first responders on the Gold Coast.

“In the space of seven hours, four people have lost their lives in the same corner of our state,” Mr Bailey said.

“Weeks out from Christmas, it is an absolute tragedy for the victims and their loved ones who have, like all of us, already endured one of the toughest years Queensland has seen for a long time.”

Mr Bailey said as the school holidays approached and more Queenslanders were expected to embark on driving holidays within the state in December and January, drivers needed to be vigilant.

“It only takes a second, one moment of distraction or lapse in concentration, to cause a crash,” Mr Bailey said.

“Sadly, after one of the best years in Queensland’s history on our roads last year, 2020 will be one of its worst.

“245 lives have been lost on Queensland roads this year.

“While the news moves on, it’s the victim’s families, friends, communities and first responders who continue to bear the lifelong pain and trauma of losing a loved one.

“These members of our community aren’t statistics.

“They tell the real and painful story of these events which continue to be all too common.

“It can happen to any of us, so the best thing a driver can do is to follow the road rules and avoid the risky behaviours that are the most common causes of road crashes.

“Every time you get behind the wheel, make sure you’re not tired, that you stick to the speed limit, haven’t been drinking or taking drugs, wear your seatbelt and put your phone away.

“There will be more drivers on our roads driving longer distances over the next few months.

“Now is the time to think about your plans to drive these holidays and plan your trip so you and your loved ones get to your destination safely.”
