Darwin disability award nominations open

City of Darwin Council is calling for nominations for the Lord Mayoral Awards, which recognise individuals with a disability who have made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Lord Mayor, Kon Vatskalis, is encouraging residents to submit nominations for people with a disability who make workplaces, community groups and friendship groups great places to be.

“We are very proud of the Lord Mayoral Awards, which honour people with disabilities who stand up for the rights and well-being of others with disabilities,” Lord Mayor Vatskalis said.

“Last year we celebrated two deserving winners: Izzy Dak was awarded the Champion Award for his ongoing involvement with working groups and advisory boards and Toby Reynolds was awarded the Rising Star award for his participation in community activities and prowess on the sporting field.

“I look forward to seeing the nominations again this year and thank everyone for taking the time to nominate valued members of our community for these awards,” he said.

There are two award categories available:

  • The Rising Star Award is awarded to a person under 25 years of age who makes an ongoing contribution to their school, workplace or community advocating for the rights and well-being of people with disability.
  • The Champion Award is awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the community advocating for the rights and well-being of people with disability.

Winners will be presented at DiversAbility Fun Day, a free celebration of the International Day of People with Disability, held this year on Friday 3 December 2024.

Winners of each category will receive a cash prize, a trophy and invitations to City of Darwin functions throughout the year.

Nominations are open until Friday 1 November 2024.
