Mystery balls shut down Sydney beaches

Mysterious balls of tar have forced the closure of seven eastern suburbs beaches, with authorities yet to confirm the source of the objects.

Clovelly and north Maroubra beaches were closed earlier today, following the closure of Gordons Bay and Coogee beaches by Randwick Council.

Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beaches were also closed “out of precaution” by Waverley council, with Council staff working to safely remove the objects.

“The safety of the community is our first priority. That’s why Council has taken the precaution to close these beaches while we undertake the safe collection and disposal of this material,” said Randwick Mayor, Dylan Parker.

“We don’t yet know what has happened to produce the debris washing up on our beaches, but we will continue to work with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of the public and clean up our beaches.”

The Council said preliminary test results had identified the objects as “tar balls” which are formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water as a result of an oil spill or seepage.

Waverley Mayor, Will Nemesh, said the Council would prioritise the safety of the community, and continue to monitor the situation closely.

“The wellbeing of our community is paramount. That’s why Council has taken the precaution to close our beaches,” the Mayor said.
