Man faces court after shot fired at police

A 58-year-old man has been charged following an incident near Coonabarabran yesterday in which a shot was allegedly fired at NSW Police officers.

Police say that shortly before 9am on Wednesday, officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District attended a home on Railway Street, Binnaway – about 35km south west of Coonabarabran – to speak to the occupant.

“Police will allege when they attempted to speak to the man, he refused to leave the home, threatening officers,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A perimeter was established around the premises by local police and an operation commenced with the assistance of specialist tactical officers and negotiators.

“About 8pm, the 58-year-old man allegedly discharged a firearm towards police, hitting a police shield, before he was arrested a short time later.”

A crime scene was established at the location and, following a search of the premises, police seized various items including firearms and ammunition.

The man was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene, before being taken to Dubbo Police Station where he was charged with a number of offences.

He was refused bail and will appear at Dubbo Local Court today.
