Shining a Light on Seniors this October

This October, Queensland will shine a light on the achievements, contributions, and connections of older people as Queensland Seniors Month returns for its 65th year.

Running from 1–31 October, Queensland Seniors Month highlights the importance of building connections across all ages and celebrates the value seniors bring to our communities. This year’s theme, “Connect and Celebrate,” reminds us of the power of social connection and the joy of coming together.

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland Chief Executive Darren Young said, “Queensland seniors light up our communities in countless ways – through volunteering, caregiving, mentoring, and friendship. Yet not everyone has the same opportunity to stay socially connected. Seniors Month is about shining a light on those contributions while also reaching out to those who may feel isolated.”

“From concerts and morning teas to cooking classes and community dances – or simply having a chat over the back fence – Queenslanders know how good it feels to connect,” Mr Young said.

He added, “Seniors Month is a time to celebrate the incredible role seniors play as the backbone of our state. They give so much of themselves, and this October we encourage all Queenslanders, young and old, to connect, celebrate and shine a light on our older community members.”

Social connectedness is one of the most important factors in creating strong communities. It allows us to build relationships with people we might not otherwise meet, share common values and experiences, and can help us to become more aware and engaged.

Through Queensland Seniors Month we can increase the feeling of social connectedness and support and empower Queensland seniors to connect, participate, contribute and thrive. Throughout October, there will be inclusive and diverse activities across Queensland, organised by hundreds of local community organisations. These organisations will provide opportunities to:

  • connect people of all ages and abilities
  • discover supports and services available when needed
  • celebrate the many contributions of older Queenslanders.

Seniors Month events provide opportunities for Queensland seniors to connect with other seniors and their communities through a range of activities in their local area from fitness classes, art and craft workshops, technology courses, social events, concerts, excursions, expos and so much more.

Celebrations will again start on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (1 October) and include the celebration of National Grandparents Day on Sunday 26 October 2025. So make sure you come and join in the celebration!
