Inspired by a cottage style environment and overseen by a Dementia Nurse Specialist, Hakea Grove’s memory care unit is one of the most advanced dementia specific units around.
The unit, ‘Amethyst’ is designed to provide a safe and holistic environment that includes ‘dementia specific’ leisure and well-being activities for residents living with dementia with an emphasis on sensory care, gentle massages, pet therapy, music, movies, scent stimulation, sunshine and fresh air.
Since individuals with dementia can become stressed or confused, a special emphasis has been placed on promoting relaxation and well-being. This has been done by creating a place where residents can gather, such as the homely lounge room, courtyard with waist height garden beds for the avid gardener, quiet room for relaxation and sun filled conservatory. The design of Amethyst allows residents to wander freely both inside and out.
The Memory Care Unit Suites come with individual wall mounted flat screen televisions, air-conditioning, emergency call bell systems, views of our lovely grounds, private ensuites and 24-hour care provided by registered nurses and care staff. Families are encouraged to personalise these rooms with familiar belongings such as pictures, furniture and bedspreads. There are various financial options available for accommodation within the memory care unit. Please contact our friendly admissions team to discuss pricing.
Hakea Grove’s Dementia Nurse Specialist, Director of Clinical Care and Clinical Care Manager are responsible for overseeing the Memory Care Unit and work alongside side staff who are fully trained in dementia specific care. Partnering with relatives to ensure the environment and activities are suited to their loved one, families are actively encouraged to remain a part of the residents’ life.

The Director of Clinical Care and Clinical Care Manager is responsible for overseeing the unit and supervising the staff who are all fully trained in dementia specific care. The training includes understanding how the disease manifests, knowing why dementia patients may exhibit disruptive behaviour, how to respond to it, and how to communicate with individuals with dementia. Staff understand that due to different levels of cognitive impairments, that this unit must be flexible to meet each resident’s needs individually.
