Woman critical after shocking Shellharbour crash during police pursuit of truck

A woman in her 50s is in a critical condition in hospital after a shocking road incident at Shellharbour, south of Wollongong, today.

Police say that at around 10.30am, officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a truck travelling north in the southbound lanes on the Princes Highway at Croom, about 9km west of Shellharbour.

“When it failed to stop, a pursuit commenced,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A short time later, the truck and a dual cab vehicle collided head on in the southbound lane.

“A passenger in the dual cab, a woman believed to be aged in her 50s, was ejected from the vehicle and struck by another vehicle. She was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.”

The truck driver, a man aged in his 40s, was not injured. He was arrested at the scene and taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory testing.

“A Critical Investigation team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said.

The investigation will be subject to independent review. The southbound lanes of the Princes Highway are currently closed.
