Police say a 92-year-old woman was lucky to escape injury after her Mercedes ran down a steep embankment and into the Yarra River in Toorak last night.
Emergency services were called to the area following reports the woman’s car had clipped a another vehicle on Alexandra Avenue before running off the road just after 7pm on Sunday.
“Officers were shocked when they found the elderly driver was able to make her way up the incline, after her sedan was found wedged on the banks of the Yarra tilted in water,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
Police have praised the Melbourne woman, and a passer-by who assisted, as she was able to open the door, make her way out of the knee-deep water and climb up the embankment.
The woman has been taken to hospital for observation and treatment for what is believed to be minor injuries.
Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the crash. It is expected she will undergo a licence review.
