Woman, 50, dies in police custody

A 50-year-old Ballarat woman being held in police custody has died after she was found unresponsive at Ballarat police station today.

Police say the woman was taken into custody yesterday and had been remanded to appear in court today.

“She was found unresponsive when police attended her cell to escort her to court,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“Paramedics were immediately called and officers commenced CPR. Paramedics were unable to revive the woman and she died a short time later.

“Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the death, with oversight from Professional Standards Command. This is standard protocol when a person has died in police custody.”
