Witnesses sought to fatal ambulance crash

Rockhampton police are appealing for witnesses as they investigate a fatal traffic crash between an ambulance and single-tanker truck at Stanwell earlier this week that claimed the life of two men – aged 87 and 65 – who were onboard the ambulance.

Police say that just after midday on Monday, October 11 a rear end collision occurred at a roadworks site, in the eastbound lane of the Capricornia Highway, involving a stationary ambulance and a white single-tanker truck.

Officers say the ambulance was stopped at a temporary roadwork traffic light when the tanker hit the ambulance from behind, pushing the emergency vehicle off the roadway, where it then rolled.

“Two male passengers, aged 87 and 65, in the back of the ambulance died at the scene,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“The male driver of the single-tanker truck was flown from the scene by RACQ Capricorn Rescue to hospital in a serious condition.”

The driver and two additional passengers in the ambulance were also transported to the Rockhampton Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police, or anyone travelling on the Capricornia Highway between Gogango and Gracemere between 10am and 12.30pm with relevant dash cam vision of the truck or ambulance is urged to contact police.
