Museums Victoria is inviting Victorians to cast their vote and help select a candidate for the state’s fossil emblem.
It says fossils are a vital part of the geological record – they act as time-markers and help geologists align the age of different layers of rock to better understand the ancient Earth.
“Mapping fossils is an integral part of geologically mapping an area. Since its inception in 1852, the Geological Survey of Victoria has been documenting fossils and their description in Victoria’s rock record,” Museums Victoria said in a statement.
“The first recorded discovery of a graptolite fossil in Australia was made in 1856 near Keilor. The fossils were coral-like, with many tiny individual animals forming a single colony that floated near the surface of the sea.
“The GSV has used graptolites to better understand Victoria’s geological evolution and to point to potential discoveries of gold, the state’s mineral emblem.”
Helping to select our state fossil emblem is a great way to celebrate Victoria’s unique and amazing geological history. Voting closes on 4 October 2021.
