Adelaide’s Transport Minister is promising less traffic congestion and reduced travel times, with motorists now able to turn left at a red traffic light signal at 19 locations across metropolitan Adelaide.
The upgrades are part of the state government’s Keeping Metro Traffic Moving initiative.
“We’ve delivered on another election commitment to allow more ‘Left Turn on Red’ intersections across Adelaide to bust congestion,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government, Stephan Knoll.
“There were seven existing ‘Left Turn on Red’ sites which were operating successfully and now we’ve expanded that to 19 across Adelaide.
“In the last five years, there were zero casualty crashes as a result of ‘Left Turn on Red’ movements at these existing seven locations.
“We know that 300 left turn movements occur under a red light condition each day, per location, making up 30 per cent of all left turn movements at these intersections.
He said the changes were saving thousands of motorists precious minutes on their commute to work or home.
“This measure will help keep traffic flowing on key roads like Port Road, Payneham Road, Fullarton Road, Marion Road and many others.”
He said the upgrade to all 19 sites had been approved by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) following a comprehensive safety review.
The State Government intends to make its final determination on whether to continue ‘Left Turn on Red’ movements by May 2021, basing its analysis on both local and interstate data, as a similar trial is currently being undertaken by Brisbane City Council, Mr Knoll said.
