Towradgi retirement village plans lodged

A development application (DA) for a new retirement village at Towradgi Beach, north of Wollongong, is now on public exhibition.

Developer, IRT, resubmitted the DA to Wollongong City Council in December last year after working with the Council to incorporate raised internal road levels to address concerns regarding maximum flood levels and adequate flood and stormwater management in lower levels of the village.

The revised DA for Elements at IRT Towradgi Beach on Murranar Road proposes the construction of 89 homes, including 17 villas, 24 villa-style apartments and 48 apartments with a mix of two and three bedrooms.

IRT CEO, Patrick Reid says the development aims to deliver industry-leading ageing-in-place housing and will be tailor-made to meet the changing needs of older Australians.

“We are passionate about supporting older Australians to enjoy the best quality of life possible and helping them maintain their independence for longer,” Mr Reid said.

“Every aspect of this village, from within each of the new homes to the roadways, directional signage and landscaping, has been designed to support our residents as they experience some of the challenges of ageing.

“For example, the bathrooms and kitchens will be fitted with modern and safe fixtures and fittings, appliances will be installed at easy-to-reach heights, and trip hazards will be minimised. Each home may also come with an emergency response system, an in-home 24/7 voice-activated security system that provides access to other safety and health monitoring features.

“Throughout the grounds, there will be ample rest points with seating, weather protection areas, and wide pathways to accommodate people travelling throughout the village by foot or with walking aids.

“All signage will be placed at eye height in easy-to-read large font and colours using icons and symbols to assist residents with finding their way.”

The next steps for the development will be determined following DA approval.
