Theatre worker charged with multiple fraud

A 55-year-old former Sydney theatre worker has been charged with 29 counts of theft after allegedly stealing nearly $75,000 from a theatre company. 

In September 2019, detectives from Sydney City Police Area Command commenced an investigation following reports cash was stolen from two theatres in Sydney’s CBD.

During the course of the investigation, police received a further report a 31-year-old man had been defrauded.

Following inquiries, a 55-year-old man was arrested at Day Street Police Station about 10am yesterday.

He was charged with 26 counts of steal property as clerk/servant, two counts of use false document to obtain financial advantage, and dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.

Police will allege in court that the man, who is a former employee, stole a total of $74,950 from the theatres between January 2018 and February 2019.

It will be further alleged he defrauded a man of $50,000.

The Rhodes man was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 14 October.
