Suspicious fires in Toowoomba

Detectives are treating a number of fires in South Toowoomba that caused significant damage to a car dealership and school overnight as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to a Fitzgibbon Street business around 4am to reports that a car was on fire.

Police say the fire quickly spread to a further six vehicles causing extensive damage.

A short time later police and emergency services were alerted to another blaze at a building in James Street nearby.

“The building attached to a catholic educational facility sustained structural damage as a result of the fire,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“Crime scenes have been declared at both locations with Ruthven Street closed as investigations continue into the cause.

“Anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious or has relevant dashcam and CCTV footage is asked to contact police.”
