Road closures for Summernats 36

The Summernats 36 car festival is revving up to get underway at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 January.

The ACT Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has today announced a number of road closures and changed traffic arrangements which will be in place for the event that includes a City Cruise along Northbourne Avenue on the afternoon of the first day.

City Cruise impacts

  • The City Cruise will be held on Thursday 4 January from 12pm to 1pm.
  • Rolling closures will be in place on the Federal Highway (southbound) from the Antill Street roundabout to the intersection of London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic will also be affected with a road closure at times on Northbourne Avenue from London Circuit to Flemington Road.
  • The rolling closures will close intersections along sections of the Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue as the cruise passes and apply to all traffic including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Traffic management including signage and detours will be in place around the rolling closures.
  • Delays are expected and road users should seek an alternate route where possible.
  • Light rail services will not be operating between Alinga Street and Sandford Street stops from12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Services will continue to operate between Gungahlin Place and Sandford Street only during this time.
    • The last full northbound service travelling from Alinga Street to Gungahlin Place will depart at 11:40 am. The first full service will resume at 1:00 pm.
    • The last full southbound service travelling from Gungahlin Place to Alinga Street will depart at 11:40 am. The first full service will resume at 12:50 pm.

Summernats Fringe Festival impacts

  • The Summernats Fringe Festival will be held on Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January from 6pm to 11pm daily at Lonsdale Street, Braddon.
  • Lonsdale Street and sections of Mort Street, and Elouera Street will be closed from 3pm to 12pm on Thursday 4, Friday 5, and Saturday 6 January to support the Summernats Fringe Festival.

Other closures

  • The EPIC Park and Ride will be closed from 7am on Thursday 4 January until 7pm on Sunday 7 January.
  • Users of the EPIC Park and Ride are asked to use nearby facilities at Well Station Drive and Swinden Street.
  • Flemington Road will be closed between the Federal Highway and Randwick Road from:
    • 7am Thursday, 4 January until 7pm Sunday, 7 January.

Changes to bus services

  • Summernats attendees can travel to and from connections to the event on regular Transport Canberra bus services. Regular fares apply.
  • Due to road closures in place, bus route 18 will be diverted from the first service on Thursday 4 January to the last service on Sunday 7 January.
  • Sandford Street, Bimberi and Phillip Avenue at Federal Highway stops will not be in service during the event. Temporary stops will be installed at the end of Hoskins Street before Sandford Street.

Changes to light rail services

  • Changes to light rail services during the City Cruise are detailed above.
  • There will be increased frequency to light rail services during the peak event hours on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January.
    • Friday 5 January, from 6:30pm to 11:30pm.
    • Saturday 6 January, from 8:30 am to 1pm and 5pm to 11:30pm.

For patrons who do not have a MyWay card, tickets for bus and light rail travel can be purchased from ticket vending machines at all light rail stops, major bus interchanges and the Canberra Airport. Debit and credit card payment is not available onboard.
