Queensland records 8 COVID deaths

Queensland has recorded eight deaths with COVID-19 and 5,854 new cases of the virus in the past 24 hours.

Two of the eight deaths were residents in aged care facilities, Queensland Health confirmed this morning.

At a press conference, Queensland Chief Health Officer, Dr John Gerrard said two people in their 60s had died, alongwith four people in their 80s, and two aged in their 90s.

“Three of these eight were not vaccinated. One had received a single dose of vaccine. Three had received two doses of vaccine and only one had received a booster,” said Dr Gerrard.

“Our thoughts are with their families.”

There are currently 579 COVID-19 cases in public hospitals – down from 628 cases yesterday – with 46 patients receiving care in the state’s intensive care units.

Queensland Premier Annastascia Palaszczuk said the state’s vaccine coverage was currently 92.25% first dose, and 90.08% double dosed. Fifty-nine percent of eligible Queenslanders have also received booster shots.
