Puppy set alight in horror attack

A man has been arrested after a caged puppy was deliberately set alight at a unit in Sydney’s south-west in the early hours of this morning.

Police say that just after 3.20am, emergency services were called to a unit on Wonga Road, Lurnea, after reports of a fire.

Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended, along with Fire and Rescue NSW.

“The blaze, which had caused significant damage to the unit, was extinguished,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A six-month old puppy was found in a cage on the balcony, suffering severe burns after allegedly being set alight. The puppy was subsequently humanly euthanised by police.”

The occupant, a 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

“Neighbours had evacuated prior to the attendance of emergency services and there have been no further reports of injuries,” Police said.

A crime scene has been established as inquiries continue.
