Protestors go mask-free in Brisbane

A group of around 50 protestors – many not wearing masks – have shut down Brisbane’s CBD this morning to participate in a pro-refugee march during the city’s traffic peak hour.

Organised by Greens councillor, Jonathan Sri, the protestors met outside Queensland Parliament and then set off toward the Department of Immigration building, marching down Adelaide and George Street.

“We’re here today because we want the government to rule out sending anyone to Christmas Island,” said Mr Sri.

“We want all refugees and asylum seekers released into the community,” he said.

“It is cheaper and kinder. What the government is doing is a fundamental abuse of human rights.”

Mr Sri said marchers would be wearing masks in line with COVID-19 public health measures, but many spotted in the group were not, including those leading the march (pictured).
