Police seize alcohol bound for remote community

Northern Territory Police have seized a sizeable quantity of liquor they say was destined for a remote Arnhem Land community.

In a statement, NT Police said officers conducting traffic operations on the Arnhem Highway last night apprehended a Subaru travelling towards Jabiru.

“The occupants stated they were headed for a remote outstation in an alcohol protected area,” NT Police said.

“A search of the vehicle uncovered a cache of liquor including beer, rum and whisky, equating to more than 300 standard drinks,

“Two occupants of the vehicle admitted ownership of the liquor and to knowing it is an offence to bring alcohol to their destination.”

NT Police say the alcohol was seized for destruction and the offenders were issued notices to appear in court.

“Police will continue to target the illegal supply of alcohol into protected areas in an effort to reduce alcohol-related harm in the community,” Acting Superintendent Michael Milde said.
