Police officer mowed down by e-scooter rider

A 40-year-old electric scooter rider who drove into a Queensland Police officer yesterday, knocking the Senior Constable to the ground, has faced court today.

In a statement today, Queensland Police said the Bayside man has been charged with multiple offences for allegedly driving the private scooter in a dangerous manner and injuring the officer in Birkdale yesterday afternoon.

“At 12pm, the 48-year-old Senior Constable was conducting speed camera duties when he detected an electric scooter travelling on Dorsal Drive towards the Birkdale Shopping Centre at 45kmph,” Queensland Police said in a statement today.

“Fifteen minutes later, the officer sighted the same electric scooter travelling on Dorsal Drive, Birkdale away from the shopping centre.

“The officer gestured for the rider stop but it will be alleged the rider continued to cross to the wrong side of the road, collided with him, and threw him to the ground.”

The man is seen on Police footage approaching the Senior Constable as he conducts speed camera duties.

Police say the officer sustained a number of injuries including a bump to his head, gravel rash to his left elbow and swelling to the base of his neck as a result of the collision.

The man dropped a bag of shopping during the collision before leaving the scene, which led detectives to view CCTV of neighbouring shops to track him down to a Mahie Crescent address where he was arrested and the e-scooter was seized.

The 48-year-old Queensland Police Senior Constable is thrown to the ground in the collision.

The 40-year-old has been charged with serious assault police, failure to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash, dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlicensed driving, unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
