Police officer charged over child abuse images

A NSW Police officer and a second man, aged 62, have been charged following an investigation into the alleged possession and distribution of child abuse material.

“In May this year, investigators attached to the Professional Standards Command commenced an investigation into allegations that child abuse material was being stored and distributed on an electronic device,” NSW Police said in a statement this evening.

“During the course of the investigation, items including a mobile phone were seized and forensically examined.”

A 62-year-old man was arrested at Five Dock yesterday and charged with use carriage service for child abuse material and possess child abuse material.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on July 13.

“Shortly after, a further search warrant was executed at Georges Hall where police located and seized electronic storage devices,” NSW Police said.

“A 49-year-old man, who is a sergeant attached to a specialist command, was arrested at the location and taken to Liverpool Police Station.”

The officer was charged with possess child abuse material and granted conditional bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on June 21.

NSW Police said the officer was suspended with pay.
