Police investigate suspicious death at Sprent

Tasmanian Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 59-year-old man at a property at Sprent yesterday.

Police say that at around 8.15pm last night, emergency services responded to reports of a car on fire at a property on Chilcotts Road.

“Tasmania Fire Service extinguished the fire, and the body of a deceased man was located a short distance away,” Police said in a statement today.

“The 59-year-old man who resided in a caravan on the property had sustained significant head injuries. The caravan had been broken into and several firearms stolen from a secure and locked firearms safe.”

“The property is currently declared a crime scene and a police investigation is ongoing to identify and locate the offender.”

Anyone with information in relation to the incident is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

“Police would like to hear from residents who may have CCTV footage covering roads in and out of the Sprent area, and any persons who may have been in the area of the Sprent Forest yesterday afternoon who might have noticed parked vehicles or movements of people. Vision can be provided to detectives by phoning 131 444,” Police said.
