Police hunt for Richmond carjacker

Police are appealing for public assistance following the terrifying carjacking of a 70-year-old couple in Richmond last Thursday.

Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told the couple were delivering papers along Mary Street around 7.10am near Abinger Road when the incident occurred.

“The 70-year-old male driver got out of the vehicle, a silver Kia sports wagon, to deliver a paper while a 70-year-old woman was seated in the rear passenger seat,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“An unknown man has then jumped out of a black Nissan SUV which was parked nearby and hopped into the driver’s seat of the couple’s vehicle.

“The offender drove a short distance and apologised to the woman before dumping the vehicle and fleeing on foot through a nearby reserve.”

Police say the woman, who was still in the vehicle at the time, was not injured during the incident.

Investigators have released CCTV vision of a man who they believe will be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be of Caucasian appearance, 30-40 years old, approximately 177cm tall with a medium build.

He was wearing a black cap, grey tracksuit pants and a grey long sleeve jacket.
