Construction has commenced on Specialist Disability Accommodation housing developments in Darwin after the Northern Territory Government provided four parcels of land with a combined value of more than $1 million to selected disability service providers.
The housing project is being delivered by Carpentaria Disability Services and Life Without Barriers and will provide innovative, fully accessible homes where residents can be independent while still receiving support.
NT Minister for Disabilities Ngaree Ah Kit said the government is proud to support disability service providers in delivering the much-needed housing.
“Specialist Disability Accommodation provides life-changing support for members of our community living with disability,” Ms Ah Kit said.
“People with complex disabilities require a range of supports and it is important that they can receive these supports whilst living as independently as possible.”
Construction has begun on two Carpentaria Disability Services’ homes after the provider recently awarded a contract to Greenspace Group.
Carpentaria CEO Annie Rily said the NT has previously had limited housing options for people with complex disabilities.
“Carpentaria has a proud history of delivering specialist services and supports for people with disability and are proud to work collaboratively to increase the housing options for people with complex disabilities,” Ms Rily said.
The Northern Territory has additional land grants for the construction of Specialist Disability Accommodation in Alice Springs currently under assessment, and opportunities for dwellings in remote communities are being investigated.
