Notorious intersection to get upgrade

Works are ramping up on the $19 million upgrade to a notorious intersection in Adelaide’s north eastern suburbs.

Service relocations are well underway at the Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Road Intersection and the tender for major works will be released next week.

It’s hoped the project, which is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments, will help unlock congestion and improve road safety at one of the north-east’s busiest intersections.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the project would deliver welcome relief to the 58,000 vehicles that pass through the intersection every day.

“This part of Grand Junction Road is a notorious safety risk for local residents and businesses with 90 crashes in the past five years alone, including 35 casualty crashes,” Minister Wingard said.

“By adding extra turning and through lanes at this intersection we can reduce the risk of crashes and address traffic flow issues, especially those caused by the slow acceleration of heavy vehicles on a key freight route.

“This project is a core part of our congestion busting agenda to upgrade key intersections across Adelaide, helping hundreds of thousands of motorists by making their journeys safer and more reliable.”

“While many are winding down for Christmas, we’re ramping up with other major works contracts awarded this week for the intersection upgrades at Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads and Goodwood, Springbank and Daws Roads to Fulton Hogan and BMD Constructions respectively,” Minister Wingard said.

“In the next six months alone, major construction will start on intersection upgrades valued at more than $200 million and support almost 200 jobs including Goodwood, Springbank and Daws Roads; Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads; Portrush and Magill Roads; and Main North Road and Nottage Terrace.”

The Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Road Intersection Upgrade is jointly funded (50:50) by the South Australian and Australian governments and is expected to open to traffic in early 2022, weather permitting.

Substantial site preparation works including service relocations and earthworks have been underway over the past two months before major construction starts in early 2021, supporting 15 full-time equivalent jobs on average per year.

Proposed treatments for the intersection include widening of Grand Junction Road (east side) with the extension of the right turn lane onto Briens Road travelling northbound, a signalised left turn lane onto Hampstead Road travelling southbound, and three through lanes on Grand Junction Road.

Upgrades also include widening of Grand Junction Road (west side), with the installation of dual right turn lanes onto Hampstead Road travelling southbound and three through lanes on Grand Junction Road.

Pedestrian crossings within the intersection will also be upgraded including new crossing lights and ramps. There will be dedicated bicycle lanes on all approaches.
