Those who contribute to diverse and thriving communities that make up The Rural City of Murray Bridge will be the focus of Australia Day celebrations this year, the area’s council has announced.
A free community breakfast, Australia Day Awards and a Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Friday 26 January at Edwards Square, in Murray Bridge.
Mayor, Wayne Thorley said all Australians were invited to embrace the Australia Day theme of ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate.’ this year.
“This is a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate Australia today, our shared values, and to acknowledge our history,” he said.
“We acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of all people who call The Rural City of Murray Bridge home.”
The Council is hosting a free community breakfast, with the help of local service clubs, for everyone to come together for a hot breakfast in the park.
“I encourage people to stay for the Australia Day Awards which celebrate the achievements of this year’s Local Legends and their contributions to our community, along with a citizenship ceremony to welcome our newest Australians.
“Australia Day Awards are a testament to the extraordinary efforts of people who contribute tirelessly to the vitality of our community – it’s not just a ceremony, it’s a celebration of our collective spirit and achievements.”
Breakfast will be served from 7am and official proceedings begin at 7.45am with South Australian Hall of Fame journalist and Australia Day Ambassador, Samela Harris, as guest speaker.
Award categories recognising the unique contributions of inspirational residents include Citizen of the Year, Award for Active Citizenship and Community Event of the Year.
