Meningococcal detected in 80-year-old woman

An 80-year-old woman from metropolitan Adelaide has contracted the potentially deadly meningococcal disease.

In a statement, the SA Government said the woman had been admitted to hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.

The strain has been identified as serotype B.

“Multiple people who had close contact with the patient have been identified, and two people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics,” the Government said.

“This is the first case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year.”

A total of 12 cases were reported in 2021. Of the 12 cases, six were serogroup B and six were serogroup W.
