Four City of Melville projects have been recognised as among the best in the State at the Parks & Leisure Australia (WA)’s Regional Awards of Excellence.
Council’s $9.6m Shirley Strickland Reserve Redevelopment in Ardross was awarded the Community Facility of the Year Award for its community focus and innovation.
Home to an association of five sporting clubs and a diverse range of leisure and community activities, the Shirley Strickland redevelopment was completed in June 2022, following many years of extensive community and stakeholder engagement.
The Council, together with environmental consultancy ArborCarbon, was also awarded the Best Use of Technology Award for their work using aerial images and artificial intelligence to accurately compare changes in tree canopy health.
Mayor, George Gear says the technology has allowed the Council to accurately map and analyse tree cover, health and change over time.
“The recent awards highlight our investment in premier parks, reserves and recreation facilities to support our community’s aspirations for healthy lifestyles and a strong sense of community,” said Mayor Gear.
“We are working to ensure we have fit-for-purpose, accessible and inclusive sports and recreation facilities for our community to enjoy.
“We are lucky to enjoy beautiful natural spaces in the City of Melville and it’s important our community has an abundance of opportunities for physical and social activity.”
The community-driven and led Davis Lawlor Park Extension in Attadale received a high commendation in the category of a playspace less than $500,000 and Bob Gordon Reserve Playspace in Bull Creek was a finalist in the playspace greater than $500,000 category.
